The Rocks at Washington Oaks State Park

Image
Today we went to the rocks at Washington Oaks State Park. We got lost, but I’m glad we finally found it because the rocks were so cool!! Rocks in Florida!! Who know?! My kids had so much fun and didn’t want to leave. We got to see sea turtles and their nest that were taped off. It started a nice discussion of sea turtle nest and how they are protected. Linden thought it was fascinating that the baby sea turtles use the light of the moon to find the sea! It is pretty cool!

Black Bear presentation

Today we went to a Florida Black Bear presentation in Daytona. The kids got to look and touch a black bear skin that was killed by a car. Some fun facts we didn’t know about bears:  All bears are born beginning of February  Fall is the most active time for bears and the best chance you would see one Female bears are more timid and males are more bold You can tell how old a bear is my cracking open a tooth and see how many rings it has Florida bears still hibernate, but not like bears up north where it’s colder Females only have their cubs while hibernating  Cubs will stay with their mom for 1.5 years Momma bears usually only give birth to two cubs After the presentation we stopped at the Daytona Library (which as an awesome kids area!) and played for a bit. Then went home and completed the bear workbook we got from the presentation. I thought the whole thing was so interesting!

Homeschool Co-op

We have joined a homeschool co-op called blue oak, and our first day was great! We loved the building, the people, the teachers and classes. This semester Jax is taking a class on Letters and PE. Linden is taking Art and American Sign Language. Kaelynn and Daniel are taking Speech and Debate. To supplement curriculum we are doing an outdoor unit studying mushrooms. Kaelynn and Daniel are also taking courses on Khan Academy for math, reading/vocabulary and science. We are very excited for this new school year and being on our own schedule and agenda!
